Going green with solar panels

Solar panels have been installed at three branches as an investment that will bring cost savings in the long term in addition to delivering environmental benefits. The installations at Ringmer, North Walsham and Albourne are already generating power and a fourth installation at Ulting is due to come online before the end of July.

The installations are capable of producing 48.25kW at Ringmer, 50kW at North Walsham, 19kW at Albourne and 47.5kW at Ulting. The policy is to generate up to 50kW from south facing roofs.

At Albourne the roof is only large enough to produce 19kW. A further installation of 100kW is being planned for Ulting as the site is a large user of electricity making a larger installation advantageous. Performance of all these installations will be reviewed over period of time before decisions are made to roll out the strategy to other branches.

Solar panel installations of this type bring a cost saving on electricity generated and used on each site and a payment is also received for electricity that is surplus to needs and which is exported to the national grid. The environmental benefits are that renewable energy of this type helps reduce the demand for electricity generated from fossil fuels and their associated carbon emissions.
